It all began with rumors that the Chinese OEM OnePlus is working on an iPhone 7 Plus-like Android smartphone. The rumored OnePlus 5 was said to have Snapdragon 835 chip and 8GB RAM option.

On Tuesday this week, the rumors were confirmed to be true as the OnePlus 5 was officially launched. The OEM says the smartphone is not just about specifications. They went to great lengths to ensure quality with regards to the device’s design, performance, battery life, and camera.

Get this; the device is already available for pre-orders in selected markets; though the official sale starts on June 27. In the US and select European markets, the OnePlus 5 variant with 6GB RAM, and 64GB internal storage with Slate Gray color will start retailing at $479 and EUR 499 respectively. While the variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage with Midnight Black color will cost $539 and EUR 559.

The OnePlus 5 is already available for pre-orders in the above said markets. The first shipment will start today, June 21st; some six days ahead of the start of the global launch.

OnePlus 5 features and specifications

Tucked away under the hood, is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC; an octa-core chip capable of clocking 2.45GHz. OnePlus says they have coupled that with Adreno 540 GPU that gives the smartphone 25% better graphic performance.

The phone has 8GB RAM, joining the elite rank of OEM that have smartphones with such a RAM. The only other smartphone with such a distinction is the Asus ZenFone AR. However, the OnePlus 5 does come in two variants; the 8GB/128GB and 6GB/64GB. The type of RAM in this smartphone is the LPDDR4X RAM that the OEM claim is 17% more power efficient than the LPDDR4 predecessor.

It has a 3300mAh battery, ceramic fingerprint sensor touted to unlock the device in 0.2 seconds. The OEM boast that the OnePlus 5 is a “true world phone,” given it supports 34 GSM network brands.

OnePlus 5 gives you a 5.5-inch full HD (1080×1920 pixel) Optic AMOLED Screen. It is protected by a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It runs OxygenOS on the Android 7.1.1 Nougat. It supports dual-SIM, dual-standby.

As for connectivity, it has 4G LTE (with VoLTE), NFC, USB Type-C (v2.0), dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/A-GPS. It also has an ambient light sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, digital compass, and proximity sensor. The OnePlus 5 weighs 153 grams and measure 154.2×74.1×7.25 mm.
