Robert Mugabe Awarded The Chinese Version Of The ‘Nobel Peace Prize'

One thing you have got to love about the China is that they are always unique. They always seem to have their own version of Western things; the Google version Baidu, the Facebook version Renren, the iPhone version the Xiaomi Mi 4, and there is even a cheaper look-alike version of the Range Rover Evoque at a fraction of the costly off-roader called LandWind.

The country also has its own version of the annual Norwegian award the Nobel peace prize, the Confucius Award. The selection committee has announced Zimbabwe’s strong-man and President Robert Mugabe as the winner this year. The award has elicited strong negative reactions from the domestic opposition leaders in Zimbabwe and pro-Western Media outlets. Some are even question whether the award was correctly named in the first place: Should it be Confucius Awards or Confusion Awards?

Serious allegations have been leveled against Robert Mugabe including using a systematically orchestrated violence and torture to sustain his 35 years rule in Zimbabwe. He has speared a vicious black empowerment campaign in Zimbabwe that saw many foreign whites with huge land parcels in Zimbabwe deposed of their property and forced to flee the country for their own safety. It has been alleged that he uses state machinery to rig the presidential election and weaken the opposition in the country. He has had many frictions with Western countries like Britain and the USA leading to cutting off aid and imposing sanctions.

Well, that is according to Western Medias, to the eyes of some, China to be precise. President Robert Mugabe is an admirable, visionary, and extinguished leader who deserves to be celebrated and emulated. Thus, they have awarded Mugabe with the Confucius Peace Prize Award, (a Chinese version of the Nobel Peace Prize).

The chairman of the award honored the Zimbabwean President by praising him for “injecting fresh energy” into the quest for establishing harmony across the globe. Beijing-based Global Times newspaper praised Mugabe for having beaten off other candidates like Bill Gates the Founder of Microsoft and Park Geun-hye the President of South Korea.

The Confucius Peace Prize in a statement used the following words in describing Mugabe’s leadership: “Ever since Robert Mugabe was sworn in as the president of Zimbabwe in the 1980s, he has worked hard to bring political and economic order to the country and to improve the welfare of the Zimbabwean people by overcoming hardship.”

The news of the awarding of the Confucius Peace Prize to Mugabe has elicited strong reactions from the country’s political opposition who have come out strongly to ridicule the award.

Gorden Moyo, the secretary-general of the People’s Democratic Party as cited by Bulawayo 34 News, said the following about the Zimbabwean President: “The rule of Mugabe is paved with blood, violence, arson and cruelty.”

Moyo while speaking on behalf of his party said that they were “utterly disgusted” with China’s decision to honor their leader whom they see to be nothing more than “a war-monger…and a sadist who delights in the misery of the people.”

The country is waiting to see if Mugabe will travel to China to receive the award in person.

About Confucius Award

The Confucius Award came about as the result of Norwegian Nobel committee angered China by awarding the its annual peace prize to a jailed dissident Chinese writer, Liu Xiaobo. As a move to ridicule the Nobel Peace Prize, Beijing started its own version, the Confucius Award.

Xiaobo still remains in prison for charges of co-authoring a pro-democracy manifesto called Charter 08. Previous leaders who have won the award include Vladimir Putin and Fidel Castro, who were all hailed by the committee for “speaking out against nuclear warfare.”

The chaiman of the committee, Qiao Damo told The Guardian, he was in full of the decision to honor Mugabe with the Confucius Award due to the exemplary leadership Mugabe has shown in his 36 years rule. Mugabe was at the front in the fight against the British who colonized Zimbabwe.

If Zimbabwe did not have Mugabe as its president, the country would be facing great difficulty – even public security might be in danger,” said Qiao.

Every country’s economy has its highs and lows. Though its economy is lagging behind, [Zimbabwe is] a very stable country and stability is precious in the African continent.”
