Samsung Galaxy S7 Active not as Waterproof as touted by Samsung | Consumer Report

The current flagship smartphones by Samsung Electronics, the Samsung Galaxy S7 are being sold as among other things, waterproof and water resistant devices. The Galaxy S7 comes in three variants; the S7, S7 Edge, and S7 Active.

In their marketing campaign, Samsung has been drumming the phones’ waterproof and dust-proof capability among the loudest. Samsung has been marketing all variants of the Galaxy S7 as having IP68 compliance, meaning they are both water and dust proof. Samsung also says that these phones can survive for a least 30 minutes under 5 feet of water.

Indeed, consumers looking for a rugged smartphone that can survive falls on the pavement and inside water have been purchasing the Galaxy S7 variants for that very reason.

However, according to a report by the Consumer Reports; a US-based non-profit rating group. The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active phones are not as waterproof as being claimed by Samsung. Consumer Reports did a waterproof test of all the Galaxy S7 variants, by simulating a 5 feet water pressure for 30 minutes in a lab. The Galaxy S7 Active did not pass the test.

The test was done on two Galaxy S7 Active smartphones, both of which failed the test. When they were opened up, there was water present in the SIM card slot and the camera lenses. They were also not functioning due to water damage. However, Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge passed the test with flying colors.

Consumer report approached Samsung with their test results. The company quickly responded in a press statement, which in part read: “one of the most rugged phones to date and that there may be an off-chance that a defective device is not as watertight as it should be.”

Samsung also went ahead to mention that they have received very few complaints from consumers regarding the devices not being waterproof.
