Samsung Launches Self-proclaimed World’s Most Advanced Smartphones: Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

Samsung has launched its flagship smartphones the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge appear to be tailor-made to not just give Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus a run for their money, but to embrace them.

Samsung has done away with their traditional plastic casing, and now the two S6 models come packed inside a strong, shiny metal and an toughened curved glass finishing. Samsung smartphone sale took a dip when Apple launched the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It now seems the South Korean manufacturer is hell-bent in taking back its market share and assert its alpha ranking in the smartphone’s market.

The narrative by Head of Global Marketing at Samsung, Younghee Lee, was a direct hit at Apple

and meant to reopen Apple’s wounds that just started healing albeit slowly. Mr. Lee while referring to Apple’s bendgate, hairgate and bend saga fired the following shots at Apple:

It takes 800 degrees Celsius just to curve the glass…Now we have the first devices of this kind – the S6 Edge… Also, the special metal that we use is 50% stronger than the metal in other high-end smartphones. My first language may not be engineering, but I do know that this phone will not bend.”

But enough of the chest-thumping rhetoric from Samsung, let us look at the features under the hood and see if the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are worth their salt.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Review

Samsung has ‘upped its game’ with the new Galaxy S6 series, unlike the previous versions that had a lot of computing power and functionalities but packed in a boring casing. The new Galaxy S6 series are as beautiful as they are powerful.

Design: Seen as a creation of Samsung’s Project Zero, the Galaxy S6 has merged glass and metal in a perfect fusion. With its metallic casing and a Gorilla Glass 4, in a rugged piece of art. The phone is 6.8mm thick and has no microsSD slot, which according to Samsung was meant to improve performance and speed. The phone also has a non-removable battery to give the phone a more unibody design. It is however disappointingly not waterproof.

Display: The Galaxy S6 is fitted with Super AMOLED Display with a 2560×1440 pixel QHD resolution. Analysts have begun questioning if such a display quality will not drain the battery too fast.

Camera: Both the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have a 16MP snapper. It also features an aperture of f1.9 (said to be excellent for

low light picture snapping), Auto HDR mode, Smart Optical Image Stabilization. The front camera also has an improved performance under low light snapping and better ability to balance white levels when using infrared.

The Galaxy S6 has packed four times the amount of pixels found in Sony’s and Apple’s flagship smartphones; the Xperia Z3 Compact and iPhone 6 respectively featuring a 720p resolution. Samsung has quadrupled that, but packing it in the same footprint as Sony and Apple.

Battery: Most people say Samsung has shot itself in the foot here. The S6 is powered by a 2550mAh battery, which is less impressive compared to the 2800mAh in models from last year. But to compensate for this, the phone can charge wirelessly, with a 10 minutes charge said to keep video playback on the phone for up to 2 hours, all thanks to the new faster charging technology.

Operating System: The S6 has the Android Lollipop OS overlaid with TouchWiz UI by Samsung. But unlike other TouchWiz UI that were not giving users an excellent experience, with the S6 Samsung has done away with the annoying pop-up menus and streamlined the apps leading to less litter around the screen.

Other Features: Fingerprint scanner that works more like Apple’s fingerprint scanner; users don’t swipe their fingers rather touch the screen. It also has the heart rate monitor, and now Samsung Mobile payment set to compete against Apple Pay.

The Galaxy S6 is said will be sold in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB storage capacity to compensate for the lack of microSD card slot. But be prepared to part with a lot of cash, if you want the latter options.
