Scrum Alliance or Scrum.org Training?

Scrum Alliance or Scrum.org Training?

An important part of any successful business is having a team that fully collaborates on a project from start to finish across different departments. Therefore, so many companies try to establish workplaces where everyone is involved, to help motivate the workforce and increase the creative juices.

One of the most effective frameworks for fostering these kinds of results that have come to prominence in the last couple of decades is Scrum. It allows for participation and cooperation, in an organized and efficient manner.

If a company is looking to implement the Scrum way of doing things, it is a good idea to invest in some training for key members of teams and departments. Given that 2 main certification bodies offer courses and industry-recognized certificates in Scrum, you may be finding it more than a little difficult to decide which is best.

In the following post, we aim to shed a bit more light on both governing bodies, outlining their pros and cons so that you can make the most informed decision if you are starting your agile journey with the Certified Scrum Master training in Sydney & Melbourne.

Scrum Alliance

There are several reasons why you should consider certification through the Scrum Alliance, just as many others have. For example, there are three main entry-level certifications offered by the organization – Certified Scrum Developer, Certified Product Owner, and Certified Scrum Master.

To obtain a certificate you need to attend a 2-day Scrum course or in-class training and an examination. The tests can also be taken online.

You dont need to get an exceptionally high number of questions right as 65% will give you a pass. The downside, of course, is that remote education can be difficult for the more elaborate and in-depth areas of the Scrum framework.

scrum.org

Comparatively, Scrum.org is a lot more flexible, because you do not need to have training before you sit the exam. That does not, however, mean that the exam is in any way easier than that offered through Scrum Alliance. Especially as it has a much higher passing benchmark of 85%. Interestingly, the course material is the same as the Scrum Alliances training. The difference comes in the certification has a different name.

When you pass through Scrum.org you achieve certification for Professional Scrum Master, and these are offered at three different levels.

Another curious thing is that, although it would make sense to go through the first and second levels first, anyone can enroll to achieve the third level without having taken the tests for the other two.

Content Quality

Now that we understand the names of the certificates and how you can achieve them, it is best to look at a vital aspect of any course, the quality of content. With Scrum.org, they are interested in making content and invite various trainers from across the world to collaborate on courses.

This, for the most part, ensures that there is a more accurate and consistent quality of the materials used in tests, including the learning experiences of different trainers and global perspectives.

With Scrum Alliance, the material used for courses is made by separate trainers. This often means you have more in-depth learning experiences and cutting-edge dimensions. The thing thats lacking with this form of content creation is the consistency. Both learning experience and quality of content vary from one trainer to another and there is no general standard.

With all the above in mind, it is hard to say which is best between Scrum Alliance and Scrum.org. Its best to decide based on the reasons for applying and your own situation. For instance, if you want a more elaborate certification, that you can take the exam for without training if that works best, Scrum.org should be your preferred choice, whereas if you want an easier, more streamlined certification process, Scrum Alliance is the way to go. In the end, though, the choice is yours.
