This Smartphone Battery Could be Charged within Seconds and Lasts for Weeks

Despite of the explosive growth in the technology, there are still some areas which seem to be the plateau in the realm of innovation. Battery life of the tech and smart devices is one such area. Companies are trying their best to pack as much battery power in small batteries as they can. No wonder Samsung messed up in this race and ended up killing its brand name. But massive researches and investment in the field of batteries are finally giving their results. Scientists have reported success in making a battery that lasts for several days, and could be charged in seconds. Experts at the University Of Central Florida (UCF) say that their newly created battery prototype works like a new battery even after being charged over 30,000 times.

This new battery technology for the smartphones is based on supercapacitors. A supercapacitor takes exceptionally less time in charging as it stores all the charges on its surface in a static fashion, and does not use chemical reactions. The supercapacitors use “two-dimensional” material sheets with large surface areas that sustain the electrons.

One of the senior research associates of this study, Nitin Choudhary, says that this battery technology is over 20 times better than the conventional lithium-ion cell battery that are widely used in the smartphone market. Using this supercapacitor battery, you can charge your phone within “seconds” and will not need to recharge for weeks. This disruptive technology has the potential to set a groundbreaking trend in the smartphone industry.

It has been a challenge to mesh graphene with supercapacitors so the research team used 2D metal materials to let the electrons pass quickly from the core to the shell. This way, the yield was catapulted.

The supercapacitor battery trumps the conventional battery in all sorts of metrics, like energy density, power density and cyclic stability. However, the technology is not yet ready for commercialization. It’s just a proof of concept that will set the trend of development in the coming years. Smartphones in the future will be working for days without charging. There is a growing appetite for devices that have more battery timings. This technology has set the trend and it will be capitalized in 2017.
