Smile Telecom Holdings Ltd. popularly referred to as Smile has rolled out East Africa’s first Voice over LTE (VoLTE) offering; a high-definition voice and video calling service. Smile wants to roll out VoLTE all over the East African region, as it strives to meet the growing demand for data among enterprises.
Smile, which has LTE network in the region, is looking to provide consumers with cutting-edge attractive new services. The telecom will first launch the VoLTE services in Kampala, Entebbe and Mukono in Uganda. It will later on proceed to other towns including Jinja, Kasese, Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale, Masindi, Gulu, Tororo, Soroti, Mbale, and Fort Portal.
The Telecom was able to launch VoLTE in Uganda using the infrastructure laid out by its long-term technology partner, Alcatel-Lucent. The service uses Smile’ IMS technology and Alcatel-Lucent Network integration, projected management and testing services.
“Smile chooses to associate with technology partners that are not only known for delivering world class networks but whom are masters at the game and deployment that we want to do at a certain time and place. Alcatel-Lucent has proven themselves to be such a technology partner,” said Tom Allen, the COO at Smile.
His counterpart Daniel Jaeger, the VP of Alcatel-Lucent African division added, “Network transformation to ultra-broadband continues apace in Africa. Universal access is vital to promote ICT and reduce the digital divide. Alcatel-Lucent is supporting the integration of Smile’s own IMS to ensure a converged network architecture that delivers new subscribers features in a cost-effective way. Smile aims to provide the best customer experience and with VoLTE it can do this, offering affordable high-speed, high-quality voice and data services.
Smile has a long-term goal of bridging the current digital divide by fast-tracking the roll-out of super-fast high-quality broadband services across the African continent. Its partner, Alcatel-Lucent will be providing the ancillary services including integration, testing and project management.
