There is no nation on the face of the planet that is paying more for fuel than Zimbabwe. The government of this country has been hiking fuel prices over and over. It has now reached an extent that the civilians are staging mass protests against this fuel price hikes.

In response to the protests, the government is meeting protesters in the streets with an iron fist. There are claims that many civilians have been injured and tens lost their lives at the hands of anti-riot police. The country’s army is also alleged to have joined in to deal with protesting civilians.

The deteriorating situation in Zimbabwe has seen the political opposition (Democratic Alliance) in neighboring South Africa send a warning to President Cyril Ramaphosa. That they will take him to the International Criminal Court (ICC), should he continue turning a “blind eye’ to the atrocities being committed by government agents in his country.

Well on Jan 14, the government of Zimbabwe ordered telecommunication companies operating in the country to kill all internet connection across the country. More on that can be found here. For a little over a week, Zimbabweans have not been able to access the internet, but the government lifted that restriction today.

The BBC’s Reality Check report explored the cost of fuel in the landlocked country against those of other countries. It emerged that Zimbabweans pay almost twice what the rest of the world pay. Below is an infographic by the BBC depicting that information.
