TechCrunch startup battlefield

In a little over a month’s time. 15 best and exceptional startups from across Africa will converge at Lagos, Nigeria where they will be going at it head-to-head competing against each other at the Startup Battlefield Africa 2018.

Attendees to the event will get to see the founders of the best early-stage startups in Africa get crowned the winner and go forth to launch their products on a global stage. These startups will be on the fast lane to securing cash injection into their business, important networks’ attention, and of course the bragging rights.

How the Startup Battlefield plays out

The Startup Battlefield kicks off with three preliminary rounds with each round pitting fives startups against each other. Each startup will get six minutes, during which its team will pitch and do live demos before a panel of judges. The panelist will include leading tech founders and VCs. The judges will have six minutes for thorough questioning.

Only the top five startups that impressed the judges the most will move to the final round of the competition. The final round consists of another pitch and demo session, but this time, the questioning will be more thorough than the previous round of pitching. Out of the five, just one (the best out of the remaining five in the finals) will be crowned the winner of Startup Battlefield Africa 2018 champion.

The winner will get $25,000 (no-equity cash) and a trip for two to participate in the Startup Battlefield in San Francisco at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2019. That is if the startup still qualifies to attend the competition.

The speakers at this year’s Startup Battlefield Africa include:

Shikoh Gitau: She works with Kenya’s biggest telecom Safaricom, where she is the head of Alpha incubator. Gitau and her team will be on a pan-African and international search for candidates that will fit into their incubation hub as a team member.
