Tanzanian Diaspora Can Now Remit Money Directly To Tigo Pesa Via WorldRemit

Tanzania’s mobile money service provider Tigo Pesa has partnered with online peer to peer money transfer service provider WorldRemit. In a move that will enable Tanzanian Diaspora to remit money directly to family and friends back in Tanzania from the Internet.

Millicom’s Tigo Pesa says that it is looking to expand users’ capability by enabling them to enjoy fully the services of international payment systems. Thus, the company decided to partner with WorldRemit to make this a reality. The new partnership will also enable Tigo Pesa users to buy airtime top ups and do bank transfers.

 “Our vision is to make Tigo Pesa customers enjoy making unlimited financial transactions both locally and internationally from the convenience of their phones. WorldRemit provides not only increased transfer speed but also offers better rates as compared to other available money transfer services,” said Ruan Swanepoel, the Head of Mobile Financial Services at Tigo Pesa.

According to World Bank database, it is estimated that Tigo Pesa and WorldRemit will be serving 250,000 Tanzanian diasporas living in the UK, U.S.A and Canada. It is also estimated that a total of $64 million gets remitted to Tanzania by Tanzanian Diaspora every year. The better part of this remittance to Tanzania comes from Tanzanians living in Kenya, UK, Uganda, USA, Canada, South Africa, and Australia.

Since 2014, WorldRemit has been able to increase its footprint over Africa’s Mobile Money services marketplace by over 200%. It also commands more than 30% of the market share in remittance services in money being sent from Europe and the USA.
