Git Lit! A Hip-Hop S.T.E.M. Based Event Allows Teens to Play, Hack And Create Games
On Saturday, November 22, 2014, Bronx teens will learn the concepts of using digital tools to creatively “hack” or customize, games, images and sounds. Soh Nup Ink, Iridescent, Carnegie Hall, Building Beats / World Up, & the Andrew Freedman Home have come together to host a Movable Game Jam and Hacker Play Spaze! event for youth at the landmark mansion, Andrew Freedman Home. The day’s activities begin at 12pm and close with an all-ages “intelligent” hip-hop concert ending at 9pm.
Movable Game Jams are an initiative of the Hive NYC Learning Network. Youth-serving organizations in the network collaborate to host gaming experiences that offer hands-on experiences to youth, allowing them to design and hack games. Read more about the initiative on the Game Jam Guide on this link. At the November 22 event, Iridescent, Black Girls CODE’s New York Chapter and Exposure Camp are participating organizations.
The Hacker Play Spaze! is a joint project between the Andrew Freedman Home & Soh Nup Ink. The event will be powered by a partnership between Carnegie Hall, World Up, Building Beats and will have interactive workshops led by them as well as by the New York Hall of Science, mobile app developers VidCode, & Hybrid Instrument Builder, Adam November & DIY inter-media artists Renegade Performance Group. The workshops will teach students concepts of computer coding, interface design, & max/msp as they create hybrid genre bending beats and hack/remix their own videos.
Artists performing at the “intelligent” rap concert, include 14 year old rapper Ceddy Jay; the former & present Science Genius Rap B.A.T.T.L.E.S. (Bringing Attention to Transforming, Teaching and Learning Science) champions, Jabari “Jalib” Johnson and Victoria Richardson; Science Rapper, Coma Niddy, of the YouTube channel, “Science Raps & Beyond;” Bronx underground MC Mike Larry Draw; youth participants from Soh Nup Ink/Andrew Freedman Home’s “Level Up Media Arts Project” like MC Gels, beatstrumentals by “the LUMA ALLSTARZ;” and a dance performance by Indio from the legendary dance company Dynamic Rockers.
