Tight Security Around Kenya’s Parliament Amidst Al-Shabaab Threats To Attack
On Sunday, March 1st, the Daily Nation ran an article with the headline “Al-Shabaab is plotting to blow up Parliament.” The Kenyan daily says it acquired a police report claiming that the Somalia-based Islamist insurgents are planning to launch an attack on the Kenyan’s Parliament.
According to the report obtained by the daily, at least 12 suspected terrorists are behind the planned attack. Police are on high alert, and security has been beefed up near Parliament buildings. The report says that six of the 12 suspected terrorist are already in Nairobi, albeit the whereabouts of the other six is still not known.
The report came in against a backdrop of Egyptian embassy in Nairobi requesting Kenya’s law enforcement agents to beef up security around Egyptian installations inside the country. Egypt wants its embassy, its envoy’s residence and other important Egyptian organization and premises be highly guarded.
This was in a letter dated February 20th that read: “The Embassy kindly requests the relevant Kenyan authorities to take what it deems appropriate to upgrade and tighten security measures around Egyptian installations in Kenya.”
According to the intelligence report, Al-Shabaab is planning to use a car bomb to blow up Parliament buildings. Parliament buildings and other key government buildings have since seen many boots on the ground accompanied by guard dogs on patrol.
