Traditional Games Redefining Digital Gaming Industry in India

It was a decade ago when India witnessed the first blush in the gaming industry with mobile games like Snake, Space Impact and Bouncing Ball, and PC games like Solitaire, Super Mario and Pacman. In the last five years, the country has seen widespread growth in mobile and online games and the credit goes to the mass availability of smartphones, and this number is increasing day-by-day. Though India is a late entrant in the gaming industry, but gaming companies are consistently making efforts to catch up with the western world by bringing digital innovation to traditional Indian games.

In a recent study by KPMG-FICCI, with a higher percentage of the population that understands and consumes mobile games, the Indian gaming market is set to reach INR 8000 million in 2017. According to the report, in 2016, India was among the world leaders in the gaming industry. The country ranked fifth globally by game downloads and is expected to surpass both Russia and Brazil in the coming years.

Now let’s retreat the old days when gamers used to play traditional card games like Rummy, Teen Patti, etc. with their family and friends on occasions like Diwali and New Year. How exciting these days were, but slowly this culture trifled away because of busy lifestyles and nuclear family patterns.

In present life scenario, gamers have switched to digital gaming and have adopted western games like Candy Crush, Temple Run, etc. Thanks to the mass availability of tablets and smartphones that people today are spending more time in virtual play to break the monotony of their busy lives. This has further inspired Indian gaming companies to rebuild and fine-tune traditional games into the digital ones in order to compete with the western world.

By launching popular games in India like Poker, Rummy, Teen Patti, etc. on digital gaming platforms, Indian gaming companies are trying to revive the old days and build sound relations with the gamers. This strategy has worked quite well in context of Indian gaming industry, and also provided players a platform to play their favorite games anytime, anywhere. Moreover, freemium model of monetization is integrated into these games wherein the users can play the games for free, and have to pay only for virtual goods. Further, the virtual versions of mythological stories are being introduced in the digital gaming world to provide online gamers an intriguing, youthful and sophisticated gameplay experience.

Thus, the gaming industry has become the fastest-growing segment in India, thanks to the generation of passionate game designers and millions of online game enthusiasts who want to quickly learn how to play poker game, rummy and other card games to earn real money on the go.
