Trinidad & Tobago Holds A Caribbean Internet Governance Forum on May 1st, 2014
Patrick Hosein, a senior lecturer at the Department of Computing and Information Technology at UWI, St. Augustine says, “In the global, multi-stakeholder internet governance model, the internet is seen as a borderless resource belonging to no single entity. Instead, it is managed by a global community of governments, corporations, technologist, academics, civil society and individual end users”.
This event will encompass a multi-stakeholder model that is currently being used by the following organizations:
- Trinidad and Tobago Network Information Centre (TTNIC).
- The registry for the .tt cc TLD, to which Hosein is a CEO.
- Computer and Communication Society (CCS) of Trinidad and Tobago Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEETT) to which Hosein is the chair.
IEEETT in association with the Trinidad and Tobago chapter of the Internet Society (ISOCTT) and TTNIC are sponsoring this forum. Speakers in attendance will include the following:
- Tracy Hackshaw – ICANN GAC vice-chair.
- Cintra Sooknanan – ISOCTT president.
- Jacqueline Morris – a member to the multi-stakeholder advisory group of the TTNIC.
- Albert Daniels – ICANN global stakeholder engagement, Caribbean manager.
The speakers will be delivering interactive presentations and answering question from the participants on internet governance. The main aim of this forum will be strengthening Caribbean presence with reference to the international fora where it is said that internet’s future is being determined.
The Caribbean Internet Governance Forum will be held the same week when the South School on internet governance which is set to provide in depth training on internet governance to a chosen number of few selected fellows. This forum will be held on May 1st, 2014 kicking off at 6:30 pm and the venue will be at the Faculty of Engineering of UWI Room 101. All members of the public are invited to attend and registration is free of charge. Later on this year, IEEETT CCS will be holding a second seminar that will deliberate on 5G network.
