U.S. Secretary of States John Kerry going to Nigeria Aug 23 | Boko Haram, Economy, Human Rights Top on the Agenda

The United States Secretary of States John Kerry will be in Nigeria come August 23. Kerry is expected to talk on how the U.S. and Nigeria could cooperate in curbing the terror group Boko Haram as well as delve into matters human rights and economy.

According to a press statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the Kerry will hold bilateral talks with the Nigeria President Muhammadu Buharin and the country’s Northern Governors. The statement also revealed part of his itinerary; Kerry will be in Sokoto and Abuja on August 23rd and 24th respectively.

In part, the statement reads: “Kerry will meet with President Muhammadu Buhari to discuss counter terrorism efforts, the Nigerian economy, the fight against corruption and human rights issues.

In Sokoto, he will deliver a speech on the importance of resilient communities and religious tolerance in countering violent extremism. In Abuja, the Secretary will meet with a group of adolescent girls working to change community perceptions that devalue the role of girls in society. He will also meet with northern governors and religious leaders.”

John Kerry will travel to Kenya after his trip to Nigeria

After his trip in Nigeria, Kerry will head to Kenya where he will hold another bilateral talk with President Uhuru Kenyatta among other top government dignitaries in Kenya and East Africa. Part of his discussion in Kenya will touch on counter-terrorism measures.

While in Kenya, Kerry will also touch on the political turmoil that currently got people in South Sudan fighting each other. He will also have a meeting with the youths in the Young African Leaders Initiative and the Mandela Washington Fellows.

After Kenya, Kerry heads to Saudi Arabia

August 24 to 25, Kerry will be in Jeddah holding meeting with top level government organs in Saudi Arabia. That meeting is said will have representatives from the UK, UN Special Envoy for Yemen and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

They are expected to delve into the conflicts currently going on in Yemen and talk on possible solutions to bring it to an end. They will also touch on the thorny issue; the Syrian conflict and the global effort to neutralize Da’esh and violent extremists.
