Uganda Disabled Youth Set To Benefit From The KiBO IT Programme

The KiBO Foundation, a Ugandan social enterprise has launched an IT programme meant to help the disabled youths in Entebbe by empowering them with IT skills. KiBO is targeting to reach out to more than 350 youths within the municipality. The initiative is intended to have a positive impact on the youths by empowering them with entrepreneurship and leadership skills.

“KiBO Foundation, Entebbe Municipality and Cisco, a global IT company, launched official CKC (Community Knowledge Centre) to give members of rural communities, especially the deaf, access to technology, to enable them look for jobs, gain education, raise their financial self-sufficiency and start business,” said Abraham Temu, Managing Director at KiBO.

“The Entebbe CKC, which was started two years ago, has so far trained hundreds of community members including teachers and the youth, who are afterwards honoured with certificates as accomplishments,” Temu said.

The programmes will play the role of a demonstration centre where the disabled youth can access “best technology in the world” which would be a significant leap from their present condition where the students cannot conduct research simply because they lack information centres.

The programme is part of a grand initiative by Cisco to give Africa’s disadvantaged groups useful technology and content.

Temu said, “By engaging municipalities in developing plans that affect the young people in challenging their mindsets, we trust that this will open their minds to becoming great thinkers as well as pillars of change within their communities.”

The launching of this programme precedes six other CKSs programmes sponsored by Cisco across Uganda in Nebbi, Lira, Ngora, Gulu, Ntungamo and Entebbe districts. Similar programmes have also been established in other African countries.

The foundation is planning to set up seven other additional centres in other parts of Uganda, including Nebbi, Amuru, Ntugamo, Lira and Entebbe.
