If you are about to get a pair of AirPods for your iPhone, I would suggest you put it on hold for just a little bit longer. That is because Apple is reportedly working on releasing the successor of the current version of AirPods.

This information came by to us from Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, who apparently has a front row seat in Apple early release secret room. It has also emerged that Apple plans to be gradually upgrading the wireless earphones over the years, just like what they do with their other iDevices.

The next version and the successor of the current version of AirPods internally referred to as “B288”, will be launch before the end of 2018. They will reportedly come with improved features including the ability to invoke Siri by just yelling out ‘Hey Siri.’ Unlike the current versions, where you have to tap on one of the AirPods to spring Siri into action.

The new AirPods will also run on an upgraded wireless chip. If you tried or successful bought the already available AirPods, you would know, the demand far exceeds the supply. Something that has attracted third-party options in huge numbers. However, the new AirPods running on custom-made Apple wireless chips, will provide superior performance and with a broader range of coverage.

Most wireless sets of headphones in the market use Class 2 Bluetooth audio connection. The new Apple AirPods is reported will have the Class 1 Bluetooth audio connection that means it will have a robust signal from a greater distance. Although it won’t be as easy on the battery life as those with Class 1 Bluetooth.

This new wireless chip that is reported will be powering the device could be the same W2 silicon that first debut in the Apple Watch Series 3. The first AirPods to market came with the first generation of the W1 wireless chips; the same one found in some newer versions of the Beats headphones.

Due to popular demands, Apple has also begun working on making the AirPods water resistant. This feature will actually feature in the next release of the AirPods – they will be somewhat water resistant – you will likely not damage them if you get caught by the rain using them outside. But it will probably be the end of them if you decide to look cool with them down in the swimming pool.
