Urban Tech Weekend Global Innovation Hack-A-Thon Brings together Tech Industry Professionals to inspire Black Youth & College-Age students to Create, Advocate & Innovate

For three days during the Urban Tech Weekend in Houston, Texas Software Developers, Mobile App Designers and App Idea Geniuses will come together for social good and compete to create, build and engineer apps during the Global Innovation Hack-A-Thon. The event will take place Thursday September 25th – 27th, 2014 at the Wyndham Houston West, Energy Corridor.

The competition is powered by Atlanta-based Covello, (a collaborative growth company) in partnership with Austin-based Developers Doing Development (a team of thinkers, shapers, and most importantly Doers that are tackling some of the biggest problems facing the developing world. The event is sponsored by MakerSquare.

The hack-a-thon will align over 40 of the nation’s brightest and boldest tech industry application developers, mobile app designers, and idea geniuses working alongside 40 hack-a-thon participants to produce solution-oriented apps in the following categories:

  1. Hacking for Justice: Humanity & World Peace Apps
  2. Hacking for Economy: Education, STEM & Literacy Apps

It is widely known that the blacks are consumers of Technology,” said Andrew West, NBITLO Urban Tech Weekend founder. Our hack-a-thon goals are to spark ingenuity, creativity and a producer-mindset in all hack-a-thon participants who will be competing for over $6,000 in prizes including the grand prize of coding scholarship valued at $4,000 by MakerSquare and a Dell Tablet System.

Maker Square focuses on teaching proper software development. As a result, graduates have found jobs writing JavaScript using Angular, Backbone, and Ember, PHP, Java, Python and Django, as well as Ruby and Rails. In the first few weeks, you’ll practice test-driven development & learn how to structure an app. They also teach a heavy algorithms component & how programming languages work under the hood.

The NBITLO Urban Technology Weekend (Urban Tech Weekend) is the crowning annual program of NBITLO.  A multi-day summit, the objectives of Urban Tech Weekend, are: to help create an environment and network to achieve the following: bridge the digital divide, create equity in the information technology workforce; diversify the STEM pipeline, and incubate and equip innovators with world class inventions and global business ideas.

The winners and judging of the Global Innovation Hack-A-Thon will take place on Saturday, September 27th at 6PM during the Urban Tech Weekend Circle of Achievement Awards ceremony at the Wyndham Houston West, Energy Corridor.
