US State Department Sponsors A Women-Focused Startup Incubator In Kenya; WeCreate

Women’s Entrepreneurial Centers of Resources, Education, Access, and Training for Economic Empowerment (WeCreate), is a new incubator in Kenya focusing on women-owned startups.

The U.S. Department State sponsored the formation of WeCreate in Nairobi, Kenya as a measure to empower women and promote entrepreneurship. The State Department sponsored the incubator as a follow up to U.S. President Obama’s commitment during the 2015 Global Entrepreneurship Summit held in Nairobi. The WeCreate center in Kenya is one of the three such centers going to set up by the State Department.

The first of such centers was established in Zambia, with Kenya’s being the second. Similar centers will also be established outside Africa in countries such as Cambodia and Pakistan. WeCreate Kenya had a soft launch back in Nov 2015. Yesterday it had its official public launch that saw the incubator, open its doors to as many women-owned startups as possible in Kenya.

WeCreate is made possible through a public-private partnership program between the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (EB) and StartUp Cup. Other partners include The Youth Banner, a non-profit working on youth development and empowerment through entrepreneurship and The African Women’s Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP Kenya Chapter).
