5-day Coding Workshop for Youths in Abuja, Nigeria

Working to advance STEM education for African Women (WAAW) foundation is organizing an immersive coding workshop for those interested in computer programming.

Whether you are a beginner who wants to get started in web development, a designer looking to hand-code their concepts, or a journalist who wants to start building a portfolio to showcase your work, this one-week Coding workshop is for you!

The overall goal of the coding workshop is to improve Nigerian youth’s potential for digital entrepreneurial activity on the internet using digital skills, increase their employability skills and help them find a job in technology space with lucrative incomes.

The intensive training is open to undergraduates and graduates. “We are encouraging more female participants but our Abuja training program is open to both male and female”, said Mrs. Ebele Agu, WAAW’s Vice president.

In this hands-on training workshop, participants will learn Web development including HTML, CSS & JavaScript, Mobile development for Android using MIT App Inventor and be introduced to Arduino programming.

The training sessions will be facilitated by WAAW foundation’s highly qualified, certified and passionate experts with a unique style to impart trainings that are highly interactive and hands-on practice, enabling students to get in-depth knowledge and skills of their respective subject, in the shortest span. Read more.

Volunteer and Mentor at Awele Academy Coding Bootcamp

The African Women Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurship (AWELE) Academy is launching another 3-week technology and innovation bootcamp in Abuja, Nigeria in 2017.

We are looking for trained programmers to volunteer as Tech Leaders/Mentors for the participants during the workshop sessions.

We are looking for someone who is:

Experienced in the following: full stack web development (HTML, CSS, JS, LAMP, etc.), Cloud Computing, Dev Tools, Version Control, and Agile Methods.  Read more.

Why STEM is a smart choice to boost Africa’s Economy Today

STEM. The new buzzword standing for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

It’s a strong word that hasn’t been embraced with much fervor in Africa during the last few years as one would expect, least of all considering much of the continent’s growth depends on those four initials.

The thing is though, STEM should not be used as just another fancy word to make organizations look all trendy and au fait in their reports.

Nor should it be used to mask the failure to help the emerging workforce while in actual sense there lacks clear and tangible plans in place to do so. Read more.

Stem Outreach and Mentoring Program – October, 2016

Our STEM chapter fellows in Makerere University, Uganda, University of Benin, Nigeria and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana organized four College-to-secondary school STEM outreach and mentoring programs and impacted 235 secondary school girls in October.

The overarching goal of this program is to bridge the secondary school to college continuum for STEM and Computer Science in Africa and to ultimately increase the pipeline of African girls entering STEM and CS careers.

On Saturday 8th October 2016 the Makerere University Chapter had an outreach program in Kampala high School. Read more.
