Evolved Node B (eNodeB) is a critical component of the 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network infrastructure. In essence, eNodeB is the hardware element in the LTE radio access network (RAN) responsible for the wireless communication between user devices, such as smartphones and tablets, and the core network.

It serves as the base station, performing all the radio-related functions in LTE, including radio transmission, radio resource management, mobility management, and signal processing. eNodeB integrates the functionalities of both the base transceiver station (BTS) and the radio network controller (RNC) found in older cellular networks, making it a more efficient and advanced system.

The primary role of eNodeB is to manage the radio frequencies used to transmit data and voice signals between mobile devices and the network. It handles user data and control plane data, manages radio signals to ensure efficient use of the radio spectrum, and provides connectivity and coverage within its designated cell area.

The eNodeB is directly connected to the evolved packet core (EPC), which is the central part of an LTE network, responsible for managing data traffic and connecting users to the internet or other external networks. This direct connection eliminates the need for intermediate controllers, making the LTE network more efficient, with lower latency and improved performance.
