WhatsApp launched Two-Step Verification for all its 1 Billion Plus Users

Two-step verification, otherwise known as two-factor authentication is coming to WhatsApp. This feature debuted on the messaging app last year in the beta version of the app.

To enable the two-step verification on your WhatsApp account, head on to Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable. When you turn on this feature, you will have to enter a six-digit passcode each time you register your phone number for WhatsApp account. That is those times you download the app afresh; when you buy a new phone or when you reset your phone.

The WhatsApp two-step verification does not work like in Gmail or Facebook, where the app generates the code each time you want to log into your account for the first time. This passcode will require you to memorize the codes in your head. Otherwise, you will not be able to access your account.

To protect legitimate users who have forgotten their passcode from being locked out of their account. WhatsApp has also set up a backup email, which you can use to disable the two-step verification in the event you forget it.

Although you will only need the passcode during those once in a long time occasion when you will be downloading the app on a new phone or a reset phone. The Guardian reports that WhatsApp will periodically ask for the passcode, just to make sure it sticks in your head. The Guardian says you will be asked as much as once in every seven days.
