Windows 10 now Runs in 14% of the World’s PCs

It looks like Windows 7 is seeding ground to Windows 10, much to the pleasure of Microsoft as the company has been aggressively rooting for its latest operating system.

A report published by NetMarketShare dubbed, Desktop Operating System Market Share for the April 2016 reveals that Windows 10 is well on its way to becoming the most popular desktop operating system.

Though currently, it plays second fiddle to Windows 7, which has a market share of 48.79% and Windows 10 standing at 14.35%. If we can put a number to these stats by March 2016, Microsoft said Windows 10 was actively being used in more than 270 million devices globally.

The NetMarketShare report includes all OSes including Mac OS X and Linux. You should take note that Windows 7, though the most popular OS. It is steadily losing ground, especially in the recent months. In April, Windows 7 recorded usage below 50% threshold and now stands at 48.79%. By March 2016, it stood at 51.89% of the OSes market share.

Another interesting thing to note is that in the month of April, Windows 10 64-bit surpassed Windows 7 64-bit as the most popular OS among Steam gamers. Moreover, the gap between them is widening with Windows 10 taking the lead.

Microsoft’s Windows XP is another OS that is steadily being phased out among users. By March 2016, reports showed that it clung at 10.9% and in April it had dropped to just 9.66%. One interesting thing about Windows XP, it is no longer being supported by its maker (Microsoft), yet it has managed to remain relevant in any discussion about OSes popularity. That speaks volume about how users are pleased with its design.

On the other hand, the fact that Windows XP is still being used by such a large number of users also means that there are so many unsecured PCs out there that are vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

With the release of Windows 10 Anniversary Update this summer, you can expect a surge in the number of PCs installing the OS. Win 7 and Win 8.1 Users who have yet to upgrade to Windows 10 should know they have until July 29th to take advantage of Microsoft’s free upgrade to Windows 10.
