CES2015: Intel Launches Powerful Processors, As Samsung Launches High Capacity Minuscule Storage Device

It is a known fact that we walk around with more processing powers inside our pockets than it took to land the first man on the moon. This is in the form of smartphones, tablets and laptops; judging by the developments currently being showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. We are expecting that these devices will get even more powerful in the not so distant future.

Intel has launched a new range of 5th Generation Intel Core processors. Comprising of 14 new processors for the consumers and business market; 10 new 15W processors fitted with the Intel HD Graphics and 4 new 28W processors fitted with the Intel Iris Graphics.

Intel says that these new chips were purposefully built for enabling thinner, lighter and more efficient experience for users. For the conventional notebooks, the Ultrabooks, Chromebooks, the 2 in 1s, mini-PCs and the all-in-one desktop PCs. Now, this is definitely some good news for consumers in need of powerful processing power.

To make matters even better, Samsung has complemented the increased processing power by Intel, with an equally impressive Solid State Drive (SSD) of 1TB. But this is the really impressive part, the 1TB SSD from Samsung is about the size of your typical business card. It weighs about an ounce, meaning it is a great storage device if you are mobile and don’t want to carry around bulky and heavy things. The SSD has been dubbed SSD T1 and is 3 inches tall, 2 inches wide and less that ½ Inch thick; less than two USB flash disks put next to each other.

You won’t be the first one to be surprised at just how Samsung has pulled this one off; packing an entire 1TB data into a minuscule device that can fit inside one’s pocket. Well, the more surprising part is this; the SSD T1 has a read-write speed of up to 450 megabytes per second, meaning its speed of transferring data is four times faster than that of your conventional Hard Disk Drive (HDD).

According to Samsung, the SSD T1 takes only 8 seconds to transfer 3GB video file compared to 26 seconds it would take to transfer the same file on HDD. Should you want to transfer, say, 10GB movie file, on the SSD T1 it would take you about 27 seconds, while on the normal HDD it would take three times longer.

The Portable SSD T1 overcomes the drawbacks of alternative options on every major pain point, making it the next external storage device of choice,” said Unsoo Kim, the senior vice president of branded product marketing at Samsung’s memory business.

The SSD T1 is bus-powered and is compatible with USB 3.0 and the previous versions. It comes in three sizes, the 250GB ($180), 500GB ($300) and the 1TB ($600).

However, we can’t deny that Samsung’s move has disappointed those advocating cloud-based storage. But to their defense, cloud storage takes a lot of time especially if you are dealing with a lot of data. It takes a longer time to transfer big data to cloud storage compared to if you were transferring the same data to the new SSD T1. Also, some users are still conservative and haven’t really embraced cloud-based storage, instead prefer having a physical unit to store their data.
