It is a fact the tech world is testosterone filled, with a handful of women here and there. However, with all the gender diversity and inclusion activism going around, there is remarkable progress being made on that front.
Though this is not hinged on scientific proof, I tent to think boys have (from an early age) very many things that make them aspire towards the STEM field. Look at the comic books for instance; the superheroes are almost always men. The superheroes are these larger-than-mortal-life beings, with these incredible powers they use to help the society.
I tend to think if a boy child grows up reading and watching about such things, they will be naturally driven toward science and technology. All the while the girl child grows up watching Cinderella movies and romance folktales. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it is not exactly kind of early exposure that will drive the girl child to want to pursue STEM education and career naturally.
In the comic world, we have few women superheroes to point out. There is, of course, the wonder woman (a long-standing character), the cat woman (who has been turned into a sexual fetish and not so much a superhero), and finally, Marvel Cinematic Universe wants to give Black Window her standalone movie.
The Black Widow character played by Scarlett Johansson has been a ‘sidekick’ superhero in the Marvel films. Not the apex superhero, but just one of the many sidekick heroes who are either helping Captain America, the Hulk, or any of the male characters achieve their ‘manly’ agenda of conquering and protecting.
Well, girl geeks out there who are into comics and superheroes films will be glad to know Black Widow will soon have her own movie, where she’s the center star saving the world from the bad guys. According to Variety, Marvel has hired screenwriter Jac Schaeffer to write a script, which has yet to be given any title.
The Black Widow movie is reportedly under development and has not yet gotten any formal green-light. Nonetheless, the fact Marvel is pondering about producing a Black Window movie is a good indication of the both gender representation movement.
It is also about time Black Widow got her own movie. She has made Marvel movies spicier ever since she came in on Iron Man 2 and The Avengers and its subsequent films. All along Black Widow has been relegated to supporting roles, and the male heroes shining at the top of Marvel’s standalone movies.
