How to Spot a Fake App Before Installing

The countless number of apps now means that we will never run out options to get an app for our needs. Unfortunately, the volume of apps also means that there are bound to be Fake Apps that do not serve the purpose they intend.

So, if you are looking for ways to spot a fake app on android, here is how.

Check the reviews

The first place you want to look at is the reviews. Apps with very low ratings are an obvious red flag. However, also watch out for positive reviews which appear generic and don’t mention what’s good with the app. If most of the positive reviews say something like ‘Best app’ or ‘good app’ and there is little mention of what they like about it, then run for the hills.

Research the developer

Another way to ensure you don’t download a fake app is by researching the developer. Google the name of a developer you have not heard of and find out more information about them. This will help you get a sense of whether or not they are reputable.

Check for typos and grammatical errors

Pay attention to the language and how it has been used in the app’s description. If you find a lot of grammatical errors and typos, then it’s likely the app is made by sketchy people. This is because professionally developed apps will often have people proofread their descriptions since they care about their reputation.

Check the number of downloads

Now, an obvious sigh of a legitimate app is that it has been downloaded a healthy number of times. An app with hundreds of thousands of downloads to millions and going up is a good sign. Thus, an app with only thousands of downloads is most likely fake.

On the other end, if an app has only been recently released but already has millions of downloads, and is not among the popular apps you know, proceed with caution.
