Womxn of Color in Computing holding a Tech Intersection Conference – Jan 26 | Mills College

We live in a world whereby each waking day humanity makes a further stride in cutting edge technology. This technology has historically been pioneered by predominantly white and male, but that is all changing. We are seeing a great diversity and inclusion in innovation within tech space. The latest of which being the Womxn of Color.

The ‘Womxn’ is an inclusive group compromising of femme/ feminine, transwomen, cis-women, and queer identity gender. And they will be holding a one of a kind tech conference – Tech Intersections – at the Mills College on Saturday, Jan 26, 2019.

The Tech Intersections will be an affordable conference bringing together the underrepresented members of the womxn of color community. At the conference, the attendees will be able to share ideas, experiences, challenges, and network. There will be at least 60 professionals within various tech fields attending the Tech Intersections.

The Womxn of Color was founded by Maira Benjamin, Ellen Spertus, Idalin Bobe, and Tiffany Prices. The four wanted to address the acute shortage of womxn of color within the tech space. They are always underrepresented in tech fairs, the workplace, and most importantly in higher positions of influence within corporates in the tech space.

This conference is important to womxn of color because we want to come together to claim our rightful place as pioneers in the technology and computing industry,”

said Idalin Bobe, who is also a founder of TechActivist.org and a co-organizer of the Tech Intersections Conference.

Why the Tech Intersections Conference?

The founders say existing tech conferences, even those designed for women, often end up having an underrepresentation of women especially as tech experts coming in as speakers and event attendees.

Additionally, such conferences are typically unaffordable. Thereby creating a financial barrier to the women and womxn who would have loved to attend them. Tech Intersections comes in as an affordable alternative with subsidized tickets to attendees who would have otherwise missed out.

Are none Womxn of Color also invited?

Certainly! The conference has also created the Ally Skills workshop open to members who don’t identify with the womxn of color grouping but are committed to the rally.

When, Where is the Conference?

The conference will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019 at the Lorry I. Lokey School of Business and Public Policy, Mills College [5000 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland, California]. If you would like to attend the conference can not afford the ticket, you will be glad to know there is a sliding fee being offered at this link.
