A Day In The Life Of A Kenyan Startup: Lamudi Kenya Offices

Kenya’s economic stability has created the ideal environment for businesses to thrive. As technology transforms the world into a global village, these advancements have facilitated the growth of e-commerce start-ups across the country.

Lamudi Kenya is one business that has found success in the country’s thriving start-up scene. Lamudi launched in the country over one year ago and has grown to host over 16,000 property listings on its site, with 17 employees now working in its Nairobi office.

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Kenya offices of Lamudi, an international real estate start-up operating in 32 countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

The office is full and already buzzing with activity from all ventures under Africa Internet Group: Lamudi, Jumia, Jovago, Kaymu, Easy Taxi and Hellofood. As leaders in the e-commerce and real estate industry, Lamudi has different departments that all work in sync as one unit. Being a startup, the working environment is quite dynamic. The monotony of routine is a rarity and the company embraces the dynamism of entrepreneurship.

First order of business is having internal meetings to map out tasks and priorities for the day, as well as merge local and global tasks from Lamudi HQ in Berlin. The Lamudi teams in all 32 emerging markets consist of client acquisition and management, customer relations management, product shop and content management, and public relations.

9:00am – We roll out! Account acquisition and management teams are out for meetings with clients to offer solutions and cement long-term partnerships. The public relations team prepares the press release ready to be sent out to the media. They also meet to discuss the best offline marketing strategies to be implemented. Customer relations and client engagement teams are fielding calls and replying to emails. The product shop and content teams upload and approve listings from clients using quality control tools to ensure relevance and great user experience is upheld.

10:00am – Short coffee break as the team catches up on the daily headlines discussing issues affecting e-commerce and the real estate industry. Shortly after, the teams get back to work to ensure the bulk of the work is covered during the morning hours.

1:00pm – It’s lunchtime! The office has an open plan setting, making it more conducive for people to easily interact with other ventures. With over 200 restaurants partnered with Hellofood, staff are able to order food and have it delivered right to their desks.

2.00pm – Back to work. Refreshed and energized, the teams are now back to work finalising any pending tasks for the day.

4:00pm – The account managers are back in the office. They meet to discuss the day’s progress, as well as to share knowledge and experiences. All teams take this time to report progress and achievements based on set targets. This is a time for the different departments to discuss different ideas and concerns that will help Lamudi Kenya progress as one unit. This goes a long way in keeping the teams motivated through different incentives.

5:30pm – Home time! Staff leave the office to go home or hit the gym. Lamudi encourages a proper work-life balance to ensure the teams remain fresh and productive when they arrive in the office every day.

And when does it end? Well, the fun never ends when you work at a start-up!
