Creating Logos and Graphics with GIMP for Free [Guide]

GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is a freeware and is perhaps the best alternative for Photoshop that is available on Windows Vista, XP, 7, 8, 8.1, MAC OS X, and Linux. It provides a great number of add-ons and extensions. The graphic and logo creation by GIMP is really an innovative art as described below.

With the aid of GIMP, you can easily create:

  • Buttons
  • Logos
  • Planets
  • Website design elements

Creating a Logo

In order to make a logo in GIMP, go to the File menu, and select Create, and choose option of logo. You will see a large list of design choices for creating your logo. Choose one of them.

As an example, Imigre-26 has been chosen as reference. Your window will ask you plenty of questions now, and providing your color options. You can customize the logo according to your own taste. Click ‘OK’ when you are done, and your logo will be created.

Generate a Button

You may be required to generate a button in a variety of cases. The most stringent of them being in web development. You can easily create an elegant button in GIMP by applying only a slight effort. In order to create the button, you need to select the ‘File’ menu, then ‘Create’ and choose ‘Button’. Under the option of Button, you can specify the beveled or round button.

These screens provide your choices for different looks of your button. In pretty much the similar manner as logo, you can customize the shape of the button. On notable difference in creating the logo and the button is to have the option of having the button in the pressed state. You can use this choice to make the viewer feel as if the button has been pressed.

Generate a Planet

By far, one of the most attractive options in GIMP is to make beautiful planets. The practical uses of creating the planets are not large and restricted mostly to the game graphics and Firefox based browser logos. In order to create the planet, use the path File->Create->Misc->Planet Render. A dialogue window will open up. You can choose the color of your planet, and you can also change the sun tilt options. Any part of the GIMP is experienced by trying again and again. Once you hit ‘OK’, you will have created your own little planet for editing further.

Generate Website Design Elements

Once you have designed your website, you need to make some theme elements for it. These elements would include bars, arrows, and other pieces. Although, GIMP might not make your web design absolutely perfect, yet you can play with it to make it work for you in the best manner. To create the design, follow the path File->Create->Web Page Themes. You will need to select an overall theme. You will need to specify the colors and textures for the theme. Once you are done, your website is ready to be launched.
