Non-Profit Digital Girl, Inc. Hosts Second Hour of Code In Bed-Stuy

Non-profit Start-Up, Digital Girl, Inc. continues their mission of exposing the inner-city youth to technology from a different perspective. On Thursday, February 12th, Digital Girl, Inc will work with the 4th and 5th grade students at P.S. 59, William Floyd Elementary School in Bedford-Stuyvesant in hopes to encourage an enthusiastic excitement to learning the concepts of computer programming.

As part of P.S. 59’s Fun Day, a day of non-traditional fun learning activities, Digital Girl Inc will hold classes in coding for 130 students. Digital Girl, Inc. has plans of following-up this introductory course with a full course non-fee based afterschool program located on school property.

Computer science drives innovation in the US economy and society. Despite a growing demand for jobs in the field, it remains marginalized throughout the US K-12 education system. Technology and software industries suffer from an extreme lack of diversity. Digital Girl, Inc. is working to change this by allowing students to learn about the discipline of computer science.

Computer Science students on average are only 18% female, 3% black and 8% Hispanic. We are living in an age where technological advancements are directly responsible for the creation of wealth amongst its inventors. It is important that the underserved youth understands that it is important to become creators of technology instead of only having a consumer mentality.

Equipping our youth, especially girls, with tech skills is integral in uplifting our children out of poverty as women working in STEM-related fields earn 33% more than women making a living in fields not related to STEM disciplines as women working in STEM-related fields earn 33% more than women making a living in fields not related to STEM.

Digital Girl Incorporated is a not for profit organization dedicated to empowering the underserved young girls of Bedford Stuyvesant to pursue careers in STEM disciplines, therefore maximizing their potential to be contributing individuals in society.
