Women Speak Up About Sexism in Tech Business

In the workplace, women have been subjugated to sexual harassment for many decades. In the technological field, it’s no different and it’s getting worse.

Nine women in the field of technology told CBS News about how they have been the victims of sexual harassment and have become so fed up with it that they published a “strongly worded manifesto,” that called out for change.

The women have kept their identities secret in the CBS story, but they all said that they have been groped during technology events and have been mistaken for secretaries by the men. They have also said the men have tried to turn business meetings into dates. If that’s not bad enough, the women mentioned that online, they have been criticized for their looks and have been encouraged to leave the industry.

We keep our heads down working at our jobs, hoping that of we just work hard at what we do, maybe somehow the problem will go away,” the women wrote. However, it may not be as easy as they think.

CBS News mentioned that the women responsible for the manifesto, are employees at well-known companies such as Adobe Systems, BuzzFeed, Kickstarter, Stripe and Mozilla. Some of them are also software engineers, designers and technology journalists from Business Insider reports.

The women have said in order to make a change, they are going to start by speaking up when they get abusive e-mails from men. They also ask that people in their own industries, both women and men, “promote diversity in the workplace for all underrepresented groups.”

Many Twitter users have already shown their support to this cause. One man tweeted, “This industry should have no place at all for prejudice.
