Google Exec claim Microsoft beat them to the GitHub acquisition

In early June, Microsoft Corp. agreed to pay $7.5 billion for GitHub. It now emerges that Microsoft was not the only big tech company interested in the repository for software.

According to Diane Greene, the head of Google’s cloud division, the search engine giant was also working on acquiring GitHub.

I wouldn’t have minded buying them, but it’s ok,” said Greene while addressing Fortune Magazine during an event held in San Francisco last Wednesday. Though there has been no official communication from Alphabet Inc. that it bid for GitHub.

Greene further said that two of Google’s products are currently the most popular tools on GitHub right now. “I really hope Microsoft can keep them totally neutral,” said Greene.

For Microsoft, the GitHub acquisition plays a key role towards attracting developers to its platform; the competitive cloud computing market.
