According to reports by the TorrentFreak, “For the fourth year in a row Game of Thrones has taken the crown for the most pirated TV-show on the Internet. The Walking Dead is firmly in second place, followed by The Big Bang Theory.”
Game of Thrones (GoT) has held the spot of the number one most torrented TV show for the last four years in a row. For the year 2015, GoT was downloaded about 14.4 million times via BitTorrent; with the 2015 season finale reaching the all-time record. Most of the GoT downloads happened within the first week of airing the show, and the numbers of torrents exceeded the total number of viewers in the US. GoT first broke all piracy record early this year when over 258,131 peers shared the same torrent files at the same time.
Coming in at second place is The Walking Dead followed closely by The Big Bang Theory with 6.9 and 4.4 million downloads respectively.
There has also been an interesting observation among pirates; they are increasingly going for higher quality releases when you compare to the previous years. Although the lower quality 480p videos remain by the far the most torrented copies; next in line are the 720p and 1080p respectively.
TorrentFreak has compiled the chart below of the most downloaded TV-shows across the globe, alongside their ratings within the US market. The data used to compile the information below by TorrentFreak was based on various sources including stats reported by the public BitTorrent trackers.
The list below does not include downloads from file-hosting services; given they have no public sources to get the data from. Therefore, the correct total number of piracy should be much higher than the stats give below.
