BlackBerry DTEK60 Review; The Last smartphone from BlackBerry

BlackBerry DTEK60

Tuesday, this week, BlackBerry launches its final smartphone before wrapping up the hardware division. The BlackBerry DTEK60 is running on Android phone and not the BlackBerry OS.

The Canadian-based smartphone pioneer has conceded defeat by Android and iOS devices. Last month, BlackBerry (BB) announced it is winding up its hardware division, to concentrate on software and security features offering.

Meaning the BlackBerry DTEK60 is the last BB phone you can buy made by the company and not outsourced to another OEM. It is also a big deal for BB, as it carries a lot of risks for the company.

This one is our phone. This is fully our responsibility,” said BB COO Marty Beard.

There are however doubts as to how much interest the BlackBerry DTEK60 will have on the market. BB did not establish a deal partnership with any telecom companies. Instead, the company is pitching its device directly to governments and companies.

It’s not necessarily an anti-carrier strategy. It’s more that we see this as the most efficient and most cost-effective way to get to that customer base,” Beard said.

The BlackBerry DTEK60 is retailing at $499 and comes with a 5.5 touchscreen. Definitely, it is not going for superstar limelight in the new smartphones scene; not when compared to the iPhone 7 and the Pixel phones.

However, if you are security conscience, then this is the Android phone you want to buy. Other BB Android-running smartphones include Priv and DTEK50.

DTEK60 also comes with a fingerprint sensor, which you can use to unlock the devices and make buy stuff online using the Android Pay. It also has an additional security layer where it integrated with the BB’s Password Keeper app.

Other specs on the DTEK60 include a 5.5-Inch Quad HD Screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 process, 4GB RAM, 32GB ROM expandable internal storage, 21MP rear camera with dual-tone LED Flash and powered by a 3,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0.
