Controlling Your Mac through Your iPhone from Anywhere [Guide]

Have you ever found yourself in a situation when you need to use your Mac but you are nowhere near it? Or perhaps your parent or grandparent got stuck using their computer, unable to do anything without your help when there was no when you were physically distant from them? Well the situation could be rescued, by you controlling your Mac remotely using your iPhone and little help from LogMeIn. With LogMeIn, all you need to do is to create an account and you’re able to control any Mac, anywhere and at any time. To do so, simply follow the following steps:

 

  • Create an Account: To start, go to www.logmein.com and follow the instructions to create an account of your own. In order to use the account, click on the verification link that is sent to your email after you are done creating the account.

  • Download Installer: Log into your LogMeIn account from whichever Mac computer you want to control and click on the green button that says “Add this computer”. To download the LogMeIn installer to your computer, click on the “Download Now” button on the next screen. If you want to control more computers then you can add them by clicking on the button that says “Add a different computer” – on the first screen. However, this service will cost you an annual fee of $299.

  • Give your Mac a name: Once the installer has downloaded, run it and assign a name for your Mac. Make sure to name it something that you’ll be able to distinguish from any other Mac you might decide to control later on.

  • Link Mac to LogMeIn Account: Next step is to link your Mac to your LogMeIn account. When the installer asks for you LogMeIn details, add the email address and password you used to create your LogMeIn account.

Although only LogMeIn account can control your Mac devices, you can add as many Macs to your account as you want – for free. But if you are an IT Expert, and would like to have more control through an increased number of LogMeIn accounts, then you can buy the annual subscription plan for $299. This upgrade comes with many of its own perks and features that are described in detail on the LogMeIn website.

  Keep to the Free Version

Once you are done with the whole installation process, LogMeIn application will start up and you’ll automatically get a free 30-days trial for the LogMeIn professional. This version of LogMeIn is otherwise $69.99 per year. Although it provides more features, it is quite useless if you don’t intend to use the account to control another Mac from your own Mac.

For controlling your Mac from your iPhone a free version is all you need so change this setting by click on the button that says “About”, available in the left margin of the application. In the next step, click on the button which says, “Switch Account or Subscription”, log in to your account and switch to LogMeIn Free from the dropdown menu of “Available Subscriptions”.

Don’t Let Your Mac Sleep

Since LogMeIn can’t keep your Mac from falling asleep, make sure that you have set up your Mac so that it can’t go into Sleep Mode. You can change these settings in Systems Preference > Energy Saver.

Get the App from the App Store

Now that your LogMeIn account is set up and connected with your Mac, get LogMeIn Ignition from the App Store for $29.99. This app runs on all iOS devices: iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Log in to your account after starting the app.

Connect to Your Mac

After you’re logged in, you’ll see a list that contains all the Macs you have added to your account. Touch on the name that corresponds with the one you want to control.

Log In

Log in to the app by using the Mac’s administrator username and password.

   Read the Instructions

After logging in, read the initial instructions then click on the green button that says “Continue to Computer”.
