We all use computers. Some more than others. For some of us, they are the main focus of our work. But they can cause harm. You can avoid harm from computers with some minor changes to how you use them. This may also require some investment, but every little change can help.
Reduce Your Exposure to EMF
Electromagnetic frequencies are all around us. You cannot see them, but they can have an impact on how you feel. EMF typically comes from electrical equipment such as computers, and they can cause anxiety, headaches, and even loss of libido from prolonged exposure. Headphones are a common contributor. Fortunately, you can get electromagnetic field free headphones that shield you from most of the EMF radiation that comes with standard ones.
Avoid Harm from Computers with Blue Light Glasses
It’s not just your ears that can be impacted by radiation. Blue light radiation comes from computer monitors and smartphone screens and can cause major issues if you are exposed to it for long periods. Not everyone gets it, but blue light sensitivity includes eye strain, migraines, and an aversion to brightness. But like your ears, you can easily protect your eyes from blue light with blue light glasses. These are relatively cheap and absorb blue light before your eyes.
Sit in Your Chair Correctly
One of the most common complaints about using computers for a long period is back pain. Back pain can be down to having a poor-quality chair. But in most cases, you may not be sitting correctly. First, you need an adjustable chair so you can raise or lower the height and position the backrest. Your eyes should be in line with the screen, with your feet flat and your knees bent. Your arms should also be slightly bent but not too far away that you need to stretch.
Take Steps to Reduce RSI
Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is very common in people who use computers. It occurs when you use the same muscles over and over in the wrong positions. Some ways to reduce this are:
Learn to type and type lightly with your fingers barely touching each key.
Use your entire arm to control a mouse and not just your wrist.
Invest in ergonomic office furniture and try a standing desk to reduce back pain.
Get up and stretch your legs or do some light stretching exercises as you need to.
Sit with your feet flat on the floor and your knees at a 90-degree angle.
RSI can be very painful and takes a long time to repair. However, with some adjustments to how you use computers and the furniture you use, you can all but eliminate most of the issues.
Take Breaks as Needed
It is vital that you take breaks when you use computers all day. RSI, radiation, and posture issues can occur. And if you do this for your job, your employer is legally obligated to allow you to take a break every now and then. All you need is five to ten minutes to stretch your legs, shake your arms and give your eyes a rest. If smokers can duck out of work every 45 minutes to indulge in a bad habit, you should never feel bad about taking a break to recover from strain.
Stay Safe to Avoid Harm from Computers
Computers are, of course, electrical. And you should therefore treat them like any other piece of electrical equipment. This means being safe when around them. For example, NEVER place a drink near your PC, monitor, or keyboard. This may take a while, but the chances are you will spill that drink and probably lose your job. Also, pay attention to wires, keeping them untangled. This isn’t your job at work, so inform your IT engineers if there are any issues of note at work.
Use OS Accessibility Features
Almost every operating system (OS), such as Windows and macOS, comes with accessibility features. These are features you can use to make your interactions much easier. For example, you can enlarge text if you have vision issues. Or you can turn on text-to-speech. There are also settings for contrast that makes it easier for conditions like dyslexia. If you have trouble moving the mouse, you change the pointer and scrolling sensitivity as well to help with mobility issues.
To avoid harm from computers when using them all day, you can make some adjustments. You can reduce your exposure to radiation with special headphones and blue light glasses. You can also take steps to reduce RSI. And using accessibility features can make your day much easier.
