How to Prevent Smartphone Addicition

Turn off Push Notifications

Push notifications are those notifications from the apps that you use. These are the notifications which tell you someone has liked or commented on your photos or that your favorite podcaster or YouTuber has uploaded. To reduce how often you check your phone then, turn off as many such notifications as possible. You do not need to be aware of all the likes across all social media platforms. So, if you want to reduce your time on the phone, minimize the temptations to check it by disabling push notifications.

Set aside a day each week to stay away

This is by far the harder to do, but having a day in which you completely stay away from your smartphone can help curb any growing addition. However, to ensure that you do not go completely offline, find a basic phone which can let you call and text or perform other basic functions.

However, to ensure that you do not quickly relapse, replace the previous time spent scrolling doing something else, for example, learning a new skill, or engaging in a forgotten hobby. Simply putting your phone down for a day and not doing anything to fill up that free time will have you scrambling for your phone in no time.

Don’t take your phone to bed

Each night, when you go to bed, enter into your blankets with the phone as far away from you as possible. You could leave it in the living room, for example, such that going for it is an inconvenience. Or you could lock it in a drawer. Whatever it is, keep your phone away from you in bed so that it’s not the last thing you see before going to bed and the first thing you see when you wake up.

Fighting a budding smartphone addiction is not easy, but with some willpower and great self-control, it is something that you can overcome.
