ownCloud Server Installation Guide for Windows 7

Cloud is in the process of reinstating the complete computing and mobile industry. Large enterprises and companies have practically shifted to Cloud or in a process of Cloud migration. Security remains a burning issue for Cloud. Solution to this issue is making your own Cloud server. ownCloud server installation is the best solution to have a Cloud at your disposal without any dependency. Installing ownCloud can be tricky sometimes, so we will teach you how to install ownCloud server in Windows. ownCloud is a free software for deployment of Cloud on premise. Linux server installation for ownCloud is also a good step for beefing up security, but we will focus on installing ownCloud for Windows 7 in this article. Let’s get started without any further delay.

 

Unlike Linux server, Windows need “Internet Information Services (IIS)” to be working in order to activate ownCloud. For that, go to Control Panel-> Programs-> Programs and Features and check IIS as shown in the figure below.

Now you have to download and install PHP and MySQL Server on our Windows machine. Installing PHP and MySQL is pretty easy. After you are with downloading and installation of IIS, PHP and MySQL, download ownCloud software. Extract it and copy the folder to “C:\inetpub\wwwroot folder. You will need administration rights to copy anything inside “C:\inetpub\wwwroot” folder.

After downloading ownCloud, go to the config folder and rename config.sample.php” to “config.php. After you have renamed, open the newly named config.php” and change the values of dbnamedbuser and dbpassword. Leave all the other options to default.

Now go to you browser, type http://localhost/owncloud (without the quotes) and enter. You will be taken to the admin panel of ownCloud server. Just sign up or login from here. That’s it.

You should also make sure that CGI is selected under Application Development Features.

ownCloud server for Windows and Linux is the best private Cloud solution for home, office and small business usage. The only drawback is that ownCloud server doesn’t allow synchronization of bandwidth that means low speeds in SMBs.
