How to Run Windows Apps and Software in Mac OS X and Linux

by Fahad Saleem

There is no denying to the fact that Mac OS has pretty powerful programs and apps, but the productivity and ease which come with Windows apps and programs has no match. If you want to install Windows programs like Microsoft Office and other apps in your Mac, there is a great free software for that. The software is called “Wine”. Wine has recently launched its latest version, dubbed as Wine 2.0 using which you can install latest Windows software, Microsoft Office 2013, 64-bit Windows app not only on Mac OS but also on Linux.

Download Wine 2.0 and follow the on-screen installation process. Wine usually offers binary files that should be installed separately. They are too complex to use as they do not provide GUI-based installation. You can use third party programs which scrap Wine source code and show a complete interface or skin using which you can install Wine. For that I’d recommend using Wine Bottler or Wine Skin.

Wine Bottler is the most popular software for running Windows apps on Mac using Wine software. You can download Wine Bottler from here. The software works with latest OS X versions like Mavericks, El Capitan, etc.

You will see a DMG file. Open this file and then drag and drop both Wine and WineBottler applications to your Applications folder in Mac for installation like we do for any other Mac application. After installation, WineBottler from your Applications folder.

WineBottler will automatically show you some of the Windows programs which you can easily install in Mac. To start with, you will see Internet Explorer (oops, no one wants to install that), Firefox, Office suite etc.

All the installed applications in Mac will be indexed under “On My Mac” in the WineBottler window. You can open the applications by double clicking them. You can also uninstall them from the same window.

If some application is not there in the WineBottler window, you can download  then right-click or Ctrl-click its .exe file to select Open With > Wine. You can also execute the .exe directly or install the application in a Mac .app file created by WineBottler.
